This is also called Auditory Brainstem Responses (ABR) or Evoked Response Audiometry (ERA). It does not require patient cooperation and interpretation; hence a completely objective test. In cases where the patient is unable to understand and give a correct subjective response and interpretation of sounds, this test can be useful. In children, sometimes it is done under anesthesia. Sound stimulations are given either through bone conduction or air conduction to evoke responses from the cochlea of inner ear and the auditory nerve. These evoked responses are recorded to assess hearing thresholds. Multiple electrodes are placed on the skull bone and mastoid bone behind the ears to conduct this test.
