Diseases of the hip are seen in all ages. When the functionality of the natural hip is compromised, it needs a replacement with artificial joint. Common hip disorder that need total hip replacement are arthirits of the hip due to various disorders like rheumatoid arthritis, secondary osteoarthritis due to avascualar necrosis, Perthes disease etc, primary osteoarthritis, traumatic conditions of the hip joint and some congenital and developmental disorders of the hip. Procedure includes replacement of the acetabular cuff and upper end of the thigh bone called femur. The implant may be fixed with or without bone cement. The complications include bleeding, stiffness of hip, infection etc. The implanted prosthesis will have a life of fifteen to twenty years.
